Mare Purchase Program bonus and incentives announced for Thoroughbred owners and breeders
TORONTO, October 24 - In keeping with its commitment to support and champion a strong and vibrant Ontario horse racing and breeding industry, Ontario Racing today announced an offer of lucrative bonuses and significant incentives through its Mare Purchase Program (MPP).

The Thoroughbred MPP is eligible to purchasers, who are Ontario residents, of an in-foal broodmare at the following 2019-2020 recognized public auctions: Fasig-Tipton November Breeding Stock Sale (November 5, 2019), Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale (November 6-17, 2019), Fasig-Tipton Midlantic December Mixed Sale (December 10, 2019), Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale (January 13-16, 2020), OBS Winter Mixed Sale (January 28-29, 2020) and Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale (February 10-11, 2020).

Eligible applicants will receive 50 percent of the purchase price, up to a maximum of $15,000 (CDN), through the Thoroughbred Horse Improvement Program (TIP) for each mare purchased.

“The Mare Purchase Program offers a strong incentive for both prospective and established Thoroughbred breeders to further invest in breeding racehorses in Ontario,” said John Hayes, Independent Chair, Ontario Racing.  “The Board of Directors of Ontario Racing and its Thoroughbred Horse Improvement Program committee continue to believe a strong and comprehensive TIP program is critical to the long-term success of the province’s horse racing industry.”

An added incentive of $2,500 for every mare that is bred back to a Registered Ontario Sire in the 2020 breeding season is also available. The MPP is capped at a maximum distribution of $50,000 (CDN) for any one individual or partnership. In order to be considered eligible, there is a minimum purchase price of $15,000 (USD) on any in-foal mare.

“Ontario Racing’s Mare Purchase Program delivers an excellent opportunity for Thoroughbred owners and breeders to receive significant bonuses and lucrative incentives to breed racehorses in Ontario,” said Katherine Curry, Executive Director, Ontario Racing Management. “The MPP provides a full complement of offerings as the Ontario horse racing industry seeks to improve the overall quantity and quality of racehorses in the province.”
