Heading into the fall sales season, Ontario Racing’s Quarter Horse Improvement Program Committee is pleased to announce the launch of a stallion and broodmare purchase program for Ontario breeders.
A total of $50,000 is available to breeders to support the purchase of actively-breeding stallions and in-foal mares from recognized public auctions outside the province of Ontario. Distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, breeders will be eligible to receive up to 50 per cent of the purchase price of an eligible stallion or in-foal broodmare, to a maximum of $10,000 per stallion and $5,000 per mare.
“With the injection of new funding from the provincial government, there is optimism in the Ontario Quarter Horse racing industry,” said Bob Broadstock, QHIP Committee chair and president of the Quarter Racing Owners of Ontario Inc. (QROOI). “We hope this program will fuel that enthusiasm as breeders head to the major sales this fall, looking to bring new stallions and mares into the province.”
The new program is designed to reward breeders for bringing new breeding stallions and in-foal mares with a race record or proven racing pedigree into the province. The goal is to increase the quantity and quality of racehorses ready to compete at Ajax Downs in the coming years.
The Stallion and Mare Purchase Program was created as part of the $500,000 in additional funding annually for five years specific to the Quarter Horse racing industry.
The funding comes from $35 million in total new money annually for five years from the provincial government for Ontario’s three racing breeds.
