Ontario Sires Stakes Stallion Spotlight: Kadabra

On March 29, Tara Hills Stud announced that Kadabra had been laid to rest. In tribute to the Hall of Fame inductee, whose impact on the Ontario Sires Stakes program will last for generations, today’s Stallion Spotlight belongs to Kadabra.

Highlights

As a racehorse:

  • Race record: 1:51.3m ($2,190,707)
  • At two, winner of 10 of 14 starts including the American National
  • At three, winner of the American National, Canadian Trotting Classic, Breeders Crown and Matron Stakes, a record of 11 wins in 14 starts and earnings of almost $1.6 million
  • At four, winner of the Titan Cup and Arthur Cutler Memorial
  • “He was a very classy horse, on the track and off. The horse had an almost human-like personality. He was rock solid on the track. He is beautifully gaited and ultra-tough. You never had to worry about him making a mistake. I could have seen him racing well at 8 and 9. He probably would have doubled his lifetime earnings. He had speed, endurance, and manners. Kadabra was just a great racehorse.” — David Miller, Hoofbeats, February 2021

As a sire:

  • Since 2006, the leading trotting sire in Canada and among the top five in North America
  • Sired 1,300 horses, 926 of which made the races and contributed to total offspring earnings of more than $101 million
  • Sire of eight millionaires and 147 horses with a race record of 1:55 or faster
  • Sire of Bee A Magician, 3, 1:51 ($4.19 million), 2012, 2013 and 2015 O’Brien Award winner, 2013 US Horse of the Year and selected for entry into the Harness Racing Hall of Fame in 2020; Emoticon Hanover, 1:50.2 ($2.04 million), Breeders Crown winner in 2017 and 2018; Daylon Magician, 1:51.1 ($2.01 million), 2011 Canadian Trotting Classic winner; and Forbidden Trade, 3, 1:51 ($1.48 million), 2019 Hambletonian winner
  • “Kadabra leaves a great legacy and influence on the Standardbred breed, not only in Ontario, but industry wide. Over the course of a 17 year stallion career, Kadabra has cemented his place as one of the all-time great trotting stallions with progeny earnings of over $101 million. It has been a great honour for us to have cared for and managed Kadabra throughout his stallion career. Thank you for your support over the years.” — David Heffering, Tara Hills Stud press release announcing Kadabra’s retirement, January 14, 2021
