Clinton opens 2016 season with new video tote board

May 18, 2016
by Dave Briggs

Clinton Raceway will open its 2016 season on Sunday (May 22) with the debut of a new video toteboard.

“We’re happy with that. The other tote board was getting tired,” said general manager Ian Fleming, reached in his office at the beloved Ontario B-track. “The new tote board is standing there. I can see it from here… They say it will be a go for Sunday.”

Fleming said the tote board is identical to the one installed this year at The Raceway at The Western Fair District in London. “It’s the very same company that put theirs in,” Fleming said.

Sunday is the first of a 15-date season at Clinton Raceway. The track will race every Sunday through Labour Day Weekend — with the exception of June 5 to make way for the 161st Clinton Spring Fair. Post time is 1:30 pm for every card.

Fleming said the track’s popular annual Drivers’ Challenge will be held on Sept. 4 as part of the final card of the year.

“It’s going to benefit the Legion again this year and that was very well received last year,” Fleming said. “Certainly in our area people see the need to support the Legion. It’s probably an underappreciated group. It’s a good fit for us.”

Fleming said Clinton Raceway will have a fundraiser for each and every card this season, starting with one this Sunday in support of Central Huron Secondary School. There will be a barbeque, silent auction bake sale, 50/50 draw, car wash and a chance to win either a $500 garden package from Verbeeks Farm and Garden or two tickets to see Carrie Underwood at London’s Budweiser Gardens.

“We find that doing fundraisers, whether it be a sports team or a school, it gets new people out, which helps us and raises some funds for them,” Fleming said. “So, we’ve got something every Sunday. We’ve got a lot of sports teams coming. Every day there is something.”

Apart from the new video tote board, Fleming said the track also added some new fencing over the winter.

“We fenced in the barn area this year, which was long overdue to separate it from the new arena. The track’s in good shape. We had a pretty decent winter. There wasn’t as much snow around,” he said.
