Sue Watson owns and breeds horses with huband Greg Watson at their Full Circle Farm in Bethany, ON. Sue said it was tough to narrow down, to just one, a horse that changed her life. Here is one important equine who has meant a lot to Sue.
In 2005 I was approached by our friend Bill Cruwys about a potential broodmare that he was retiring from racing at Picov Downs. She was Suns Elegant Lady or “Sunny”, a kind, beautiful big-boned Quarter horse.
We were then at the forefront of the new slots-at-reactracks program (SARS) soon to come into play at our small “j” track, Picov Downs. So I went into partnership with Bill and together we researched potential stallions to breed Sunny to. Having come from the Thoroughbred side I was happy for Bill’s knowledge on the Quarter horses.
Her first foal was Sum Fun To Watch, who went on to win the Alex Picov Memorial Futurity in 2009. “Sox” as he is affectionately called still resides here at our Full Circle Farm as my daughter Stephanie Keeble’s riding horse.
Tragically Bill died in the spring of 2009 and never got to see Sunny’s first foal race and win.
Well, perhaps because I wanted to honour Bill’s legacy and also because of the love of the mare, I went on to breed her many times and each time I was with her during foaling I would think how proud Bill would be. She’s had six foals, five to race, all winners including Sox, Cruwysn Down Home and First Lady Katy. Her last foal will race as a 2-yr-old in 2017.
I have so enjoyed seeing all her foals be born, grown up and become successful wonderful horses. She will stay with me forever.
