“I think the horse that changed my life is Doug's Legacy. He was a horse that was showing signs of being very temperamental and could certainly have become a big problem. I was recommended to work with him. That is how I met Maggie, my future wife.
Not only did Casper (Doug's Legacy) do well on the track and gave me more confidence in myself and also to future clients, but the relationship that started with Maggie changed my focus from a partying bachelor to a husband, father and trainer, with more focus.
Doug's Legacy was named after Maggie's late father, Doug Wakley, who was a huge racing fan and started with Quarter Horses, all of which brought his family into the racing business.
The fondest memories that come to mind when I think of Casper off the track (there are many) are Douglas, my son, at two years of age, riding Casper as I led him around. The smile and laughs of joy riding him gave me such a warm feeling. Riding is my passion and sharing your passion is one of the greatest joys of life.
Another memory is being able to call Casper's name at any time and see him pick his head up and come to me for whatever I have in store for him on that day, whether it's to go for a hack with a former Olympian or to tease a mare for breeding. Seeing him every day brings a smile without fail.
Whenever I think of Casper, I think of the gentle giant that he is, at 17 hands, and almost as broad as he is tall. I also think of the power of his sheer being and the heart of gold. He has no intention of hurting anybody and has the power to take logs out of the bush like a draft horse.
Doug's Legacy
is the horse that changed my life.”
