Notice to the Industry: Thoroughbred Racing Silks Registration
TORONTO, July 22, 2020 – Ontario Racing would like to make horsepeople aware of an upcoming change to the registration of Thoroughbred racing silks in the province.

Effective April 1, 2021, the AGCO will no longer administer the registration of Thoroughbred racing colours in Ontario.

After careful consideration, in consultation with Ontario Racing (OR), Ontario’s Thoroughbred tracks have made the determination that registration of Thoroughbred racing silks in the province will no longer be required after April 1, 2021.

Use of racing silks will be managed after that date by each Thoroughbred track individually, including development of policies that will be used by the track to determine whether specific silks designs will be permitted to be used at that racetrack. Commencing April 1, 2021, it will be the responsibility of each horse owner to ensure that any new designs are acceptable to the track(s) at which they are intended to be used.

The decision was made, in large part, to reflect the similar approach of the majority of other Thoroughbred racing jurisdictions throughout North America.

“In keeping with its commitment to serve as the voice of the horse racing industry in the province, Ontario Racing remains dedicated to keeping horsepeople apprised of any important and relevant information,” said Katherine Curry, Executive Director, Ontario Racing Management. “After discussions with the province’s Thoroughbred racetracks and industry leaders, as well as researching current processes utilized by other racing jurisdictions in North America, the decision was made that the Ontario Thoroughbred tracks would not assume responsibility for registration of Thoroughbred racing silks.”
