Ontario Welcomes 14 New Stallions for 2022 Stud Season

The 2022 breeding season is beginning across Ontario, and the province is adding 14 new stallions to its existing stock.  Four Thoroughbreds, six Standardbreds, and four Quarter Horse stallions, will be added to the lists of Ontario Sires.

THOROUGHBRED

Four new Thoroughbred stallions brings the total number of registered Ontario Sires to 42 for the 2022 breeding season.

“New stallions and bloodlines give Ontario breeders more diversity and opportunities locally to breed for the Ontario Sired incentive racing program,” said Peter Berringer, President of the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society, and Ontario Racing Thoroughbred Improvement Committee Member. “Breeders are the mainstay of the horse industry and new stallions are essential for Ontario breeders to have increased local opportunities and diversification for future successes in the sales ring and racing.”

ABARTA: The son of Into Mischief and Smart Strike mare Dame Marie qualified for the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Turf in 2020. Abarta will make his debut as a sire at Tara Horse Farm.

AHMAS: The son of four-time graded stakes winner Hard Spun and Eraada (GB), by Medicean (GB), broke his maiden in 2021 at Charles Town. He will stand at Silver Fox Stallions.

BOND STREET (IRE): The son of Galileo, a multiple Grade 1 winner in Ireland, will stand at T.C. Westmeath Stud Farm Inc. He is out of the Grade 3 stakes-placed mare After (IRE) by Danehill Dancer (IRE).

SPEIGHTSTER: The son of Speightstown and Dance Swiftly (Danzig) ranked fifth in North America among second crop sires in 2021. His progeny earned $4.2 million to propel him to that lofty goal, with 71 winners. He will stand at Northern Dawn Stables Inc.

STANDARDBRED

Six new stallions will join the Standardbred ranks in Ontario in 2022, for a total of 55 registered Ontario Sires.

The new stallions show what a world class program the Ontario Sires Stakes is. Bar none we have the best program in North America,” said Tammy McNiven, member of the Standardbred Improvement Program Committee. “They will help our stallion population by bringing in some new blood to freshen everything up.”

A ROYAL HIT: The son of million-dollar earner Royalty For Life and Kadabra mare Hit The Hay, A Royal Hit will stand for Peter Albrecht in Atwood, Ont.

BETTING LINE: Former OSS champion Betting Line returns to Ontario for his sixth season at stud. The son of top Ontario sire Bettors Delight and Heathers
Western earned $1.6 million in a career that saw him triumph in the North America Cup and Little Brown Jug. He stands at Winbak Farm.

BP CHIMO: The son of Grinfromeartoear and Western Hanover mare Chimi Hanover earned $286,950 and was a three-time Gold Elimination winner in his career. He stands at owner James Barton’s farm in Branchton, ON.

BULLDOG HANOVER: The 2020 Super Final champion as a two-year-old, Bulldog Hanover took his 1:48 record in the Circle City Stake at Hoosier Park last fall. The son of Shadow Play and Artsplace mare BJs Squall will stand at Seelster Farms.

CATTLEWASH: A five-year-old son of the legendary Somebeachsomewhere, Cattlewash joins the Tara Hills farm for his second season standing stud. A winner of $1.3 million, Cattlewash paced to a world record 1:46.4 at The Red Mile as a three-year-old.

CENTURY FARROH: A winner of $1.5 million in his four-year racing career, Century Farroh is a son of Hall of Fame sire Mach Three and out of Real Desire mare Beachy Girl.  He will stand at Seelster Farms.

QUARTER HORSE

The addition of four new stallions marks nearly a 20 per cent increase over 2021 and brings the total number of accredited Quarter Horse stallions to 21.
“These four new stallions show that the programs we have in Ontario are working,” said Bob Broadstock, President of Quarter Racing Owners of Ontario Inc., and Ontario Racing Board Member. “We have an attractive program, and it’s working well to stabilize the industry in the coming years.”

CARNEROS: The son of Prospect To The Top and Cakebread And Thou is familiar to Ajax Downs fans as he has banked most of his $108,189 in career earnings at the Ontario oval. He stands for Milena Kwiecien at GFR Equine Services

PAPIII CHULO: The son One Sweet Jess and Special Gilda has $3,211 career earnings at Ajax Downs. He stands at Brooke Sisson’s.

MAKIN AN EFFORT: Makin An Effort comes to Ontario by way of California. His sire, Hall of Famer Special Effort, won 13 of 15 starts, recorded $1.2 million in career earnings and still holds the distinction of being the only horse to ever win the two-year-old Triple Crown at Ruidoso Downs, which he did in 1981. He
stands for Scott Reid & Phil Furlonger at SR Training Centre.

ROYAL STREAKING CASH: Unraced Royal Streaking Cash comes from a family of successful racehorses. Both his sire Royal Ligigation and dam Streaking
Forthewine enjoyed six-year racing careers. He stands for Kimberly Picard at Double KP Ranch.
