$100,000 Alex Picov Futurity Showcases Ontario's Top 2-Year-Olds

The 20th edition of the prestigious Alex Picov Memorial Futurity, worth $100,000, goes Monday, October 5 at Ajax Downs and an impressive field of 10 advanced from the Time Trials three weeks ago.

The important 2-year-old race is headed by two fillies, STREAKINLILWAGON and AH CANDYLAND, the Trial winners, but their competition in the 400-yard final include some fast improving colts.

STREAKINLILWAGON (pictured, New Image Media) is undefeated at Ajax Downs in three races after she just missed winning her career debut at Remington Park in Oklahoma in April after a stumble at the start. Bred and owned by Jason Pascoe and Bryanne Langford's GFR Equine Services in Pontypool, Streakinlilwagon won her Trial by half a length under jockey Helen Vanek, defeated previously unbeaten Twixt of Fate, winner of the Ontario Bred Futurity.

Streakinlilwagon will start from post position four while Twixt of Fate, owned by Richard Wincikaby of Englehart and trained by Michelle Woodley, is to her inside in post three under leading rider Ed Walton.

The Wincikaby/Woodley team are also represented by AH CANDYLAND, who scored a 7 to 1 upset in the second Futurity Trial in her second career race. The flashy chestnut filly held off a fast closing Ontario-bred Had to Be Relentless in that win, posting the slightly faster time of the two Trials of 20.50 for an 83 speed index. Ismael Mosquiera gets the mount on Ah Candyland.

Trainer Craig Spada, a realtor from Ridgeway who trains his horses at Fort Erie racetrack, has a team of four 2-year-olds set to challenge the favourites in the 10-horse Futurity. Of that quartet the filly ROSIE PERRY, a fast closing third to Streakinlilwagon, is a contender with jockey Cassandra Jeschke.

First race post time Monday, Oct. 5 is 12:55 p.m. The Futurity goes as race 8 with a post time of 4:04 p.m.
