Nick Barnsdale’s Kawartha Downs Selections: Saturday, September 19, 2020
Best Bet – (2) SAUBLE ATTACK – Race 3
Spot Play – (1) TICO TIME – Race 6

Race 1 – (2) BUTTERCUP WILL shows gate speed in recent outings and gets the switch to Nick Boyd tonight. She will be untouchable once she makes the top. (1) SWEET NAN raced superbly three back, but was poor last week following a DNF. The draw and soft field here, though, offers her a chance to return to form. (5) WILDCAT DELIGHT showed marked improvement in her last start to take the show spot. She’s worth inclusion underneath.

Race 2 – (5) HETALKSTOANGELS should have no problem with this field as he drops from Grassroots company. (3) SIENNA TREELANE led every stride but the last few in her previous attempt. She figures to try going down the road again; if so, she’s in with a chance. (9) DREAMEX caught the previous selection in the September 12 contest. Post nine hampers her chances, but she merits consideration on that performance, and her successful spell at Rideau in August.

Race 3 – (2) SAUBLE ATTACK beat better horses at Georgian on August 30 and will face little difficulty tonight. (1) HES GOT A VENDETTA has been a consistent performer at this level. He seems to be edging closer to a second victory, but it will likely elude him here; using underneath. (3) ROYAL DIAMONDS can be expected to go straight to the engine and take a spot on the ticket once again.

Race 4 – (3) ANTHEM SEELSTER has scored in both recent miles she’s completed by open lengths. While this contest is a competitive one, it’s difficult to decide against this sharp filly. (5) TWIN B SALSA drops steeply out of the Excelsior series. Her performances there were noteworthy, and she stands tough against Kawartha foes. (6) BETTOR MOVE OVER performed strongly in two recent Kawartha outings and will present a strong challenge again, if Ryan Guy provides his charge with an optimal trip.

Race 5 – (6) RUSTYS FLYING has much superior form to all of her foes – she’s produced two great efforts at Kawartha over the past two weeks and won a pair at Hanover in August. Boyd picks up the drive to make her appear even more appealing. (9) JETSET CHARMER wins often but may be hard-pressed from the nine-hole, unable to utilize his early speed. Regardless, his ability trumps most of his foes today. (5) SHOW ME SOME MAGIC has put together some fast miles at Rideau lately and now drops in class. She’s winless in 21 this year, but signs point to improvement.

Race 6 – (1) TICO TIME found late horse last time at Rideau Carleton at the end of a boxed-in trip from hell. The three-time winner in 2020 will be an unjust overlay, as he’s capable to beating these – especially from the rail. (2) JUSTA BANDIT has been out of control recently; he’s taken three straight victories, and four from his past five – one by fourteen lengths! Boyd hops aboard again and will be the one to beat. (3) SEA LAIRD looks nearly as good as the above, finishing each of his past six in the top two spots. A showdown is expected between he and Justa Bandit.

Race 7 – (3) LDL GEM nearly overcame a first-over challenge in her most recent. She’s a steady improver that should be hard to beat from post three. (1) PUTNAMS FIRE looked much improved in last week’s victory. The rail should see her marching early and contesting throughout. (6) YNOTHOS returned to winning ways at Leamington last week. Recent failures at Kawartha raise doubts, but the mare did race well and may have needed an easier field to renew her form cycle.

Race 8 – (3) BLAMEITONTHEWHISKY has missed the board only twice in the last seven weeks – both against superior Woodbine types. He should dispatch this group handily. (5) SEVERUS HANOVER put in a sharp qualifier and will be ready to take on lesser foes than he faced in the Rideau preferred classes in July. At his best, he may edge out the top pick. (2) STORMONT DUNDAS can break his long run of middling efforts with the class drop tonight.

Race 9 – (1) NEEDLECREST and (6) MACHAPELO renew their battle from last week, which concluded in a tight victory for the latter. The nod goes to the former for the inside advantage and the punishing route he took to bear down on the latter down the lane. (5) BET TILL DAWN struggled in higher classes at Rideau, but will certainly be more competitive against these $7,000 claimers; possible.

Race 10 – In a field laden with class droppers, I’ll take (3) VANILLA MALTED on top. The gelding couldn’t survive driving on through a 26.2 opening panel, but he fought bravely to take the place spot. This 20-time winner can certainly grab another. (4) BRIGADIERBRONSKI A was last week’s winner of this condition, and he will be a force to be reckoned with, even amongst very strong opposition. (5) BIG JOURNEY grinded first over in Brigadierbronski A’s aforementioned win, but couldn’t grind out the win, finishing a narrow second. An easier trip here may reverse his fortunes.

Race 11 – (4) JAYDENS PLACE slides down the class ladder once again and will look to better his disappointing try on August 15. The resistance is ordinary, and therefore, defeatable. (5) ROCKIN WIZARD is a journeyman gelding that has fallen on hard times in 2020. He still must be respected in the track’s lowest condition, and he’s worthy of a call for second. (7) MIGHTY MACH has hit the board in two recent starts and six times this year. Must-have underneath.
