Best Bet - (4) STEWS WATCHING - Race 1
Spot Play - (4) SHORTYS GIRL - Race 4
20-Cent Early Pick 5 - Race 1: 4/3,5,7/4,6/2,4/1,8 = $4.80
20-Cent Early Pick 4 - Race 3: 4,6/2,4/1,8/3,5,9 = $4.80
20-Cent Late Pick 4 - Race 8: 2,3,9/1,9/3,5/1,3,6,8,9 = $12.00
Race 1 – (4) STEWS WATCHING had to win from post ten in his first career start and not only did he win, he won convincingly. Will be tough to beat tonight. (7) STONE CARVER is the main danger to my top pick. He has raced from mid-pack and the outside, I like his versatility. (2) HASHTAG WATCH ME got roughed up against these at Mohawk Park last out. He doesn’t typically have speed off the car but watch out late, he will be flying.
Race 2 – Trainer Richard Moreau looks to drop and pop tonight with (3) MIDIROSE. She draws well again this week and has the ability to show promise. (7) FASHION BLOGGER doesn’t get much help with the draw this week, but her first start back to the races wasn’t a bad one. I think she could improve in this spot. (5) TIARA DANCER is another class dropper that looks to improve off a decent mile at Mohawk Park.
Race 3 – (6) ATS HANOVER put in a big effort last week at Mohawk. He really had to work hard to be a game third; shouldn’t have the road trouble he did last week tonight. (4) NASSAU HANOVER closed nicely from off the pace last week to finish second behind a strong Stews Watching, who is my top pick in the opener. This colt clearly gets along well with Saftic. (2) CENTURY INVICTUS gets a key driver change to James MacDonald who has done some good things with this gelding.
Race 4 - (4) SHORTYS GIRL draws into an interesting spot to kick off her 2-year-old season. Her connections obviously thought highly of her entering into the Grass Roots series before she had to battle sickness. She draws in against slightly easier and if you get anywhere near 6/1, you’ll be getting her at an overlay price. (2) WASAGA gets some much-needed post relief and Jamieson returns to the bike for this filly by Hes Watching. She is a solid closer like her father. (3) B VANISH picks up Christoforou tonight off two decent efforts at Georgian.
Race 5 – (1) LYONS PRIDE put up a big speed figure last week from post eight, getting beat by three-quarters of a length. He is versatile and won’t have nearly as much ground to make up from the rail. (8) MY BLUEBERRY BUCK would probably have been my top pick had it not been for the post draw. He is a gelding who likes to fire early; interested to see how things shakeout for him from the outside. (3) LAST CALL GEROME got the perfect trip last week and couldn’t shake free late; going to give the gelding by Big Jim another chance here.
Race 6 - (3) EATAAMS ELLIE comes across the border back from a decent stint in the US. The Sportswriter mare does her best work on the lead, look for her to be bounding out of there early. (9) ONE MORE GIRL comes in from Georgian where she was better against similar last week. She makes her second start off Lasix this week. (5) DREAMADREAMFORME has only been worse than fourth once in her last four starts; wouldn’t count her out at a decent price. (2) MIDNIGHT SURF gets a key driver change to Jamieson, look for her to be in the mix. (1) EZRA EXPRESS figures to make the Super Hi-5 from the rail.
Race 7 - (2) GOOGLE MY CHROME left from post eight last week, and didn’t have anything left for his foes through the stretch. He gets the benefit of a better draw and should improve for trainer Blake MacIntosh. (5) SPORTS SECTION takes a massive drop in class dropping out of the Gold ranks where the son of Sportswriter, didn’t have much for his competition. He should get a better and much easier trip this week. (7) SHADOWMOON RISING is another colt that tested the water at the Gold level last out. The biggest thing going against him tonight is the post draw.
Race 8 -(9) THE DEVIL YOU KNOW got the trip last out and closed gamely to win easily at short odds. He draws the second tier tonight; the biggest question is going to be who will he follow out of the gate with the rail not having much speed advantage. (3) HIGH FLYIN JAMIE has struggled some with the post draw as of late, this is a good spot for this horse by Warrawee Needy. (2) CHUCK HEATON LOVE stepped up to face this class last week and didn’t do that badly; he gets another chance to strut his stuff tonight.
Race 9 - (1) JUJU HANOVER makes his first career start tonight off a pretty decent effort in his qualifying prep for this race. The son of Artspeak draws the rail and will most likely try to ration the speed out up front. (9) STONEBRIDGE APOLLO didn’t do that great from post seven at Mohawk last week, there is inside speed, so I look for him to get a better trip. (2) STILL THIRSTY gets some much-needed post relief this week; that was some effort at Mohawk last out having to make up that much ground.
Race 10 - Millionaire (5) EASY LOVER HANOVER steps up in class following a nice win last out putting up a big speed figure. The son of Somebeachsomewhere looks to continue his success this week after a strong 7-year-old campaign. (3) YS LOTUS is another stepping up to face tougher company tonight. He has gate speed and should be leaving from here. (1) DREAMFAIR B J didn’t get the best of trips last week, he looks to improve with a driver change to J. Harris.
Race 11 - (8) ST LADS BEAT IT looks to make it five in a row since coming back off the layoff. Post eight could make things tough, but he has won from out here before. (6) FREDDY BEAR takes a step back in class from the Preferred group where he was racing pretty well. He is the closer of the field and will be on the scene late. (9) OUTLAWGRABBINGEARS is a versatile gelding who can race from just about anywhere. Don’t count the son of Smart Shark out this week. (1) PLAY JET RAY steps back in class coming in from Mohawk Park. (3) IDEAL JET has had some success on a half before; he should be in play this week.
