Fans flock to Ajax Downs to welcome back Quarter Horse Racing

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon, horse racing fans crammed into Ajax Downs for the opening day of the 49th racing season of Quarter Horse racing.

A crowd of over 500 welcomed back the Quarter Horses and fans were treated to an amazing effort by the 10-year-old, almost-white gelding, One Kool Wave, who won for the 24th time in his career in the day's featured $19,000 allowance race.

Owned by DK Training Centre in Bowmanville, ON, in partnership with breeder Robert Bailey, One Kool Wave, the 2010 Horse of the Year, won the 250 yard dash by a nose over Countrys Comin Bac in a time of 13.18, for a whopping 104 Speed Index. The big grey, who was one of three winners on the card for jockey Brian Bell, received a round of applause when he returned to the winner's circle.

Wagering on the six-race card increased a whopping 75 percent from a similar card on opening day a year ago.

Both on-track and up-link wagering totals increased substantially on the first of 25 race dates of the 49th racing season at Ajax Downs.

Racing resumes on Mother's Day, May 13 with the first 100 moms receiving a flower and a betting voucher.
