Standardbred Improvement Program

The Standardbred Improvement Program (SIP) is a component of Ontario’s Horse Improvement Program (HIP). The program offers incentives for the breeding and ownership of Standardbred race horses in Ontario. Incentives are made available in awards and purses through Ontario Sires Stakes (OSS) races, purse bonuses and benefits for breeders and mare owners.

Who Receives The Benefits From The Program?

  • Owners of Ontario Sired horses racing in the Ontario Sires Stakes
  • Owners Ontario Sired and Ontario Bred horses racing in overnight races in Ontario
  • Owners and Lessees of Ontario Resident Mares with Ontario Bred purse winning offspring racing in the Ontario Sires Stakes and selected open stakes.

Program Criteria

Detailed information and the rules surrounding the various program components are provided in the Standardbred Improvement Program Criteria Book which is published annually. It is the responsibility of all participants to make themselves aware of the eligibility requirements and the various opportunities under the Program.

Program Components

Program Eligibility 

All participants wishing to enroll mares or stallions in the Standardbred Improvement Program must hold a current Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) licence. Contact the AGCO at 416-326-8700 or 1-800-522-2876, by email at [email protected] or online at www.agco.on.ca.

Program Key Dates 

Ontario Sires Stakes Program: 
Stallion Registration January 15
3-Year-Old Sustaining Payments February 15
2-Year-Old Sustaining Payments March 15
Yearling Nomination Payments May 15


 

 

Ontario Resident Mare Program: 
Mare Enrolment: Prior to Foaling ($50) or after foaling, but before September 1st of the foaling year ($300). 

Please note: Third party proof of residency must be submitted if enrolling after foaling.
